Stian Westerhus is one of Norway’s hardest working young improvisers and plays with acts like Monolithic (along side Kenneth Kapstad from Motorpsycho), Puma, Nils Petter Molvær Group, Isungset / Westerhus, Bladed, Eldbjørg Raknes, Crimetime Orchestra amongst others. Over the last couple of years Stian has begun to challenge the confines of his electric guitar, on his own on stage. With little or no respect for the limits of his instrument, Stian’s shows are a balance between expressiveness, virtuosity and melodic instinct on the one hand and his Norwegian heritage and teenage years spent listening to Slayer on the other. He creates the kind of soundscapes that cross the boundaries of what could be considered improv guitar music and into a maelstrom of genres. Stian Westerhus’ first solo record “Galore” was released in May 2009 on the respected Rune Grammofon label with his second “Pitch Black Star Spangled” coming exactly a year later.
