Jenny Hval, perhaps for some of you better known under as Rockettothesky, comes from a writing & performance studies background. Her lyrics are at the very heart of what she does, creating songs that are both direct and poetic but also melodic and open. Jenny has donetwo albums under the moniker Rockettothesky. In 2006 she released her debut L.P. “To Sing You Apple Trees” an innovative and provocative pop record that was nominated for both Spellemann (Norwegian Grammy equiv.) and Alarmpris awards. two years later, she returned with the follow up “Medea” which took her in a whole new direction focusing on altogether darker subject matter. After the release of “Medea” Jenny Hval went in a different career direction entirely, publishing her first novel “Perlebryggeriet” before returning to music to create, alongside Susanna Wallumrød (Susanna and the Magical Orchestra), a commission entitled “Meshes of Voice” for Oslo Jazz Festival. In 2009 she was again commissioned to write a song for trio BOA for Ultima Festival, creating the work “Take My Voice” with author Inger Bråtveit. Subsequently her own music took yet another new path, beginning to play live with improv musicians Håvard Volden and Kyrre Laastad. 2011 will see the release of her first record under her own name, via the legendary Rune Grammofon label.
