The band Hjálmar have, since their inception in 2004, become a bit of a cultural phenomenon in their native Iceland. They began as a sort of reggae experiment and managed, in spite of the music industry’s scepticism, to win over hearts and minds with their catchy mixture of soulful reggae with more local musical roots. The band’s authentic sound coupled with their respect for the music and the audience has turned them into one of Iceland’s best loved bands. Their shows are energetic and colourful but at the same time laid-back. The band radiate good vibes and win over each and every person in the audience wherever they play spreading their infectiously gleeful sound. The band have released four albums, all well received by the critics. All have gone gold in their native Iceland and their most recent “IV” has since gone platinum. They were also nominated for best pop / rock album at the Iceland Music Awards in 2010. Over the year’s they’ve received a number of such nominations including best live band, best newcomer as well as best pop/ rock album.
