Erik Skodvin is one of Norway’s best known unknown musicians. He is perhaps to ambient-laptop-electronica what Fenriz is to black metal. Best known as half of duo Deaf Center, or as head honcho at record label Miasmah, but he is equally as impressive on his own with solo project Svarte Greiner. Svarte Greiner isn’t easy to describe. A quick Google search reveals descriptions such as “acoustic doom”, “doomtronica”, “ambient doom”, and “neo-classical noise”. These could appear confusing, but ably illustrate how complicated the sound of Svarte Greiner really is. Demanding, but at the same time extremely rewarding. Svarte Greiner is engaged in pure darkness manifested as music, but this is not a negative thing. “Embrace your grief, for there your soul will grow” wrote Carl Jung. Svarte Greiner works with darke themes, both in a mental and physical sense, and there is no way around that being a contemplative experience. But one that is important to be exposed to. Svarte Greiner live is often dark in a visual sense, but still most beautiful. Whatever setting you experience Svarte Greiner in is unimportant, what is certain though is that it will be an experience.
