It isn’t all that often that the critics and the record buying public actually 100% agree with each other, but that’s exactly what happened when Tommy Tokyo & Starving For My Gravy put out “Smear Your Smiles Back On”, their Warners released 2008 debut. Outrageous reviews, a Spelleman nomination (Grammy equivalent) and sales past the 20,000 mark followed. The band returned with their follow up “Go Time, Show Time & Absolute War” in Autumn 2010, a record that was again critically acclaimed that draws the listener deeper in to Tommy Tokyo’s distinctive, lush and burlesque rock universe. The band sits somewhere on the musical spectrum that could perhaps be described as European Americana, with frayed keys, driving drums and guitars and Tommy Tokyo’s emotive vocals at the heart of it all. The band continue to ignore the form book, shunning traditional song structures and creating unpredictable melodies that don’t just demand but also command the listener’s full and complete attention. Tommy Tokyo & Starving For My Gravy have reinforced their position as one of the most fascinating bands in Norwegian rock today.
