Mari Boine is a leading Sami world music vocalist and musician, who is credited with reinvigorating joik as a medium and modernizing Sami music in general by introducing elements of jazz, rock and folk music. She has won a number of Spellemann awards, which is the Norwegian equivalent of a Grammy and a couple odf Nordisk Råd gongs and in 2009 was made a knight of the realm (equivalent of an OBE) by the Norwegian king for “multifaceted artistic works”.
