Sleep Party People, even though the name might indicate otherwise, is a solo project, conceived in the bedroom of one Brian Batz somewhere in Copenhagen. With his piano, guitar, an old drum machine and some boxes of electronic tricks, Batz escapes from the trials and tribulations of every day life to a warm, fantastical universe where dreams fly free. Taking in elements of My Bloody Valentine’s shoegaze, Coctau Twins’ mystique and Flaming Lips’ eccentricity, the result is rather hard to pigeon hole, but that isn’t really important is it? Sleep Party People’s self titled 2010 debut was released to rapturous acclaim in his native Denmark and was even hailed as “one of the weirdest and most beautiful albums to come out in a very long time” and “a hazy, dreamy and wonderful debut album” by two of the nation’s biggest newspapers. The album tracks include piano lullabies, instrumentals and pop hits from a strange but better dimension. It has a depth and prowess that points towards some of the great, dark records of a bygone era such as The Cure, My Bloody Valentine or Slowdive, but remains undeniably contemporaneous.
