NRK Urørt finalists last year Put Your Hands Up For Neo-Tokyo, or PYHUFNT for short, are a perfect blend of electronica, hip-hop, rock, pop, avantgarde, r&b, jazz, blues, reggae, folk, country and dubstep. That is, all the genres you can think of, at once. That was was how their breakthrough record “The Blood of Brethren” worked out anyway, a record that is both provocative and inspiring, a kind of dubstep meets Animal Collective if you will. The press have a tendency to pigeonhole them as a band in the mold of TV On The Radio, Animal Collective or Why? even though that’s perhaps a little wide of the mark. The band began life as a solo project called NJAAL, but PYHUFNT is a step further into the cosmos: Lyrics and sheer complexity are key elements; something one doesn’t see or hear enough of these days. The boys themselves say that they’re inspired by a diverse range of acts including perhaps (but not limited to) This Heat, Aphex Twin, The Diplomats, Wolf Parade and Robert Owens. The result is something new, fresh and distinctly un-Norwegian.
