It is not often possible to truly put hand on heart and say a band is unique. But in Danish band Frisk Frugt’s case it really is true. That being said, they’re not actually a band more of a solo project, under the guidance of a one Anders Lauge Meldgaard. His first release under this particular moniker came in 2006 in the form of long player “Guldtrompeten”. The snappily titled follow up “Dansktoppen møder Burkina Faso i det himmelblå rum hvor solen bor, suite” came in 2010 and shows all the hallmarks of being made by someone who might have picked up more than one or two influences from a trip to Mali and Burkina Faso. African guitar sounds and rhythms meld with modern composition, improv and more traditional songwriting in a boundary breaking and genre transcending experiment. One moment it is all noisy and cacophonous the next it is catchy and melodic. Artistic comparisons are difficult, but if you’re familiar with the Eno / Byrne classic “My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts” you’ll have a fair understanding of where the artist is coming from. Frisk Frugt are also nominated for the inaugural Nordic Music Prize, which will be presented during by:Larm 2011.
